Driving in Iceland in the winter

If you want to be technical, the winter in Iceland lasts from the end of October to the end of April. But winter conditions can happen anytime between late August and early June, Iceland is a sub-Arctic country after all.

Winters in Iceland are dark. Depending on when you come, daylight can last anywhere between 4 and 8 hours.

 

Don't worry, though, it isn't complete darkness for 16-20 hours. Iceland is sometimes called the land of twilights since they last for hours, especially during winter.

 

But this still means that you will have to plan your sightseeing tours accordingly. You will not be able to drive from Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón Lagoon in one day and see the lagoon.

 

Additionally, due to the days being so short, the sun does not rise high in the sky, and it seems like the sun is just there to shine directly into your eyes. So, bring good sunglasses with you! This is a piece of good advice, no matter when you come to Iceland.

 

Oh, of course. You will not be able to experience the midnight sun but boy, oh boy, are you in for a treat! The Northern Lights are visible in Iceland between the end of August and end of April. You will be able to see the spectacular light show most of the time if the skies are clear during that time (and if there have been any solar storms). The Icelandic Met Office's webpage is handy for checking the forecast – both for the weather and the Northern Lights.
