If you want to discover Reykjavik, you’ll need rental cars and here’s why. Reykjavik the buzzing capital of Iceland might not be the biggest city you’ll come across but make no mistake it is huge in land area. With limited public transport it is simply impossible to fully enjoy the city without having a car of your own.

Enough with what you can’t do. Let’s find out what you can do in Reykjavik with rental cars.

From Reykjavik Airport to the City

Firstly, getting from the airport to the city center. Reykjavik Airport is about 40-minute drive from the city. So, unless you want to spend your holiday at the terminal you’ll need a car. This will not only give you more time to explore Reykjavik, but you’ll be doing it at your own time and pace.

There are other means of getting from the airport to Reykjavik, like a bus or taxi, they are both expensive and you’ll always end up having to rent a car anyway if you want to have a chance to travel. So, the best thing to do is picking up a car upon arrival.

Why do I need a Rental Car in Reykjavik?

With a rental car in Reykjavik, you’re no longer stuck with sights within walking distances. Keep in mind that there are no trains in Reykjavik, only public buses. There’s also no Uber or other similar service, only taxis.

Even just getting around in the downtown area of Reykjavik can be a hassle without having a car. Especially during winter when the streets are covered in snow and the weather is not very walk friendly.

Where to go in Reykjavik with a Rental car.

There are so many interesting places to visit in Reykjavik. So, let’s list up a few that you can easily visit with rental cars.

Sky Lagoon: If you want to soak in a luxurious geothermal pool in the capital area you can. Located in Kópavogur, Sky Lagoon is the perfect place to relax and enjoy.

Kringlan Shopping mall: Iceland’s first and biggest shopping mall. With a great variation of shops and a newly upgraded food hall and indoor parking, Kringlan shopping mall has it all.

Perlan: Perlan or the Pearl of Reykjavik is an iconic landmark of the city. Not only is Perlan very cool looking it also hosts exhibitions and there is a restaurant on the top with the best view of Reykjavik.

Laugardalur: Laugardalur valley is the heart of Reykjavik. There you can find Reykjavik’s main swimming pool, Laugardalslaug as well as parks and Reykjavik petting zoo. It is the most family friendly place in Reykjavik.

Bláfjöll: If you’re looking for an outdoor activity, Bláfjöll skiing resort is found on the outskirts of Reykjavik. It is Iceland’s most popular skiing area and there is a ski and snowboard rental on sight.

Viking village: If you’re looking for a cultural experience, the Viking Village in Hafnarfjörður is where you need to go. There you can get a taste of Iceland’s Viking heritage in a unique and fun way.

Fun Day-tours for Reykjavik

Having a rental car in Reykjavik will not only open up the city. It will also allow you to explore its surroundings. From Reykjavik you can take great self guided tours. Including some of Iceland’s most iconic attractions.

  •         Golden Circle
  •         Snæfellsnes Peninsula
  •         Glymur Waterfall
  •         Blue Lagoon

Seeing the Northern lights in Reykjavik

Yes, it is possible to see the Northern Lights in Reykjavik. The Auroras are visible in Iceland, throughout most of the year, except in high summer. However, due to light pollution for the city it is best to find a darker place to get the best view.

With a rental car in Reykjavik, you’ll have no problem moving around and finding the perfect spot to enjoy the beautiful Northern lights. I recommend going to places such as Grótta Lighthouse and Heiðmörk for a better view of the Auroras.

Best time to rent a car in Reykjavik?

When is the best time to visit Reykjavik and have a rental car? With a rental car you’re not limited to any season. You can literally enjoy the city at any time of the year. Whether it being winter or summer festivals, shopping or just touring the city and finding interesting stops.

In Reykjavik you’re not nearly as dependent on the weather as in other parts of Iceland. This also means you do not need a special kind of vehicle like a 4x4 rental. I do however recommend having a 4x4 rental in Iceland during winter. Even in Reykjavik, just in case you want to adventure out of the capital area.

Conclusion

To wrap things up. Reykjavik is a great city which offers a unique experience. With a rental car you can truly enjoy its culture and scenery in the most convenient and effective way possible.

In my opinion there’s no better way to discover Reykjavik, the most northern and magical capital in the world.
