5 Exciting Outdoor Pools in Iceland

5 Exciting Outdoor Pools in Iceland

When you hear Iceland, everybody thinks of the Blue Lagoon, the Northern Lights, and volcanoes but there are more spas and pools to dip your toes in while touring the country.

Mývatn Nature Baths

Found in the north of Iceland, near the Krafla volcano, the nature baths are open all year round. The man-made lagoon holds alkaline waters at 36-40°C which run from National Power Company´s borehole in Bjarnarflag.

The panoramic view is classically Icelandic, but seeing is believing! Prices range for adults from 4200ISK-5000ISK depending on the time of year you visit. Just in case you do forget your swimsuit or towel, you can rent them!

Laugardalslaug

Based in Reykjavik, this 50m pool is perfect after a tour of the city. The multiple pools are all heated, and some even have slides to keep the children occupied while you bask in the warm water. There isn’t much of a view compared to other places on this list, however, if you have a Reykjavik City Card you can enter for free (amongst other places).

Hofsós swimming pool

North Iceland hosts a lot of fantastic pools, Hofsós was also designed by the same person behind the Blue Lagoon to appear as an infinity pool (although technically isn’t) with views that stretch out as far as the eye can see from a hillside by Skagafjordur. Make sure to check the opening times as these often vary, but this pool is not worth missing!

Krossneslaug

In the West Fjords Peninsula in the north of Iceland, you can find Krossnes, home of the Krossneslaug infinity pool. Since it’s situated close to the sea, Krossneslaug is perfect for all times of the day, but especially as the sun rises and sets. Opening times vary depending on the time of year, particularly shorter during winter months, but a hidden gem regardless.

Akureyri Thermal Pool

This facility has 2x25m pools, hot pots, jacuzzis, waterslides and soon to have even more! Renovations and additional facilities are being added over 2018 to keep the pools exciting for the locals and a real head turner for tourists. Open all year round the pools can be found in the north of Iceland, not very far from the Akureyri city center, making it a convenient little secret for you to tell your friends about.

From reading this list of pools to visit in Iceland, you can surely see that when it comes to swimming and relaxing, Iceland is truly the place to be.
